How to Create the Perfect Multi-Media Space

As technology advances, so does our need to keep up with all the latest trends. If you have accumulated several new pieces of expensive equipment over the years, there are several steps you should take to prepare your home for these new additions. First, consider whether it’s time to assess the worth of your home contents and take out specialist home insurance.
Second, create your ideal space in which to store them. Whether you have the space and resources to dedicate a room to media and entertainment, or simply need to make additional space in your living room, check out our guide to creating the perfect multi-media space in your home.
Location
If you need to create an area in your lounge that can accommodate a range of media equipment, consider building a media cabinet that is tailored to the size and shape of the existing space. For those with the luxury of a room used solely for this purpose, create a custom made media room in which to enjoy your equipment. Where possible, choose a rectangular area with a flat ceiling, approximately 12ft high, as these dimensions work best for sound.
Decor
For the best effect, decorate with dark colours throughout the room. This will create a theatre-esque atmosphere and help the television screen to stand out against the walls. Consider a palette of dark reds, blues and browns and choose furniture that will create a cosy, comfortable setting. Walls that are teeming with wires and components can detract from the room’s aesthetic, so make sure you include a cabinet to conceal anything not in use. Floor to ceiling curtains will also help absorb sound and help to create an intimate environment.
Lighting
Lighting in your media room should be kept subtle and soft and placed so that there is no glare on the screen. Often windows are unavoidable, so if your new media space contains these sources of natural light, use blackout curtains to keep it out during the day. Not only can exposed windows distract from the media experience, but they also reflect sound waves. This can be avoided by double covering the glass with blinds and heavy curtains.
Components
Label the wires for each piece of equipment you have for ease of use, and keep them organised as a matter of safety. Ensure that the amplifier you use is powerful enough to fill the room with sound and can handle existing equipment and any new pieces you may buy. It is also worth considering a universal control to control everything in the room, including curtains and light fittings.
